Unveiling the Achievements of the Just People Project: Promoting Inclusion in Sports

In the ever-evolving landscape of sports, where competition, camaraderie, and athleticism take center stage, it is essential to ensure that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, feels welcome and respected. The Just People project, funded by the European Union's Erasmus+ Program, has been a beacon of progress in this regard. Let's delve into the remarkable achievements and results of this initiative, which aimed to combat discrimination against LGBTIQ+ individuals in the realm of sports.

A Journey of Collaboration and Learning

The Just People project embarked on its mission with a virtual Kick-off meeting on September 23, 2022, bringing together associations from diverse corners of Europe. Thanks to the Erasmus+ Program, ASD Sparta Pugilato, Asociația Tinerilor cu Inițiativă Civică, Club Atlético de Queluz, and Club de Lluta Olímpica La Mina were able to unite and focus their efforts on promoting a more inclusive sporting environment.

The project emphasized raising awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTIQ+ community in sports. This, in turn, required a multi-faceted approach, with each association concentrating on two specific topics during Local Preparatory Meetings. These deep dives into key issues paved the way for informed discussions and knowledge sharing during the subsequent Big Transnational Meeting, held in Rome from February 15 to 18, 2023.

Deliverables that Tell a Story

The Just People project's tangible outcomes reflect the commitment and dedication of its partners. Notable deliverables include:

  • Informative Website: An online platform designed to disseminate information and resources about the project's goals, actions, and findings.

  • Advocacy Campaign: A powerful initiative to raise public awareness about the discrimination experienced by LGBTIQ+ individuals in the sports world. The campaign aimed to give a voice to the voiceless and shed light on the challenges faced by these individuals.

  • Policy Paper: This document outlines the official stance of the participating associations on issues related to LGBTIQ+ discrimination in sports. It serves as a guiding document for future actions.

  • Guide and Carousels: These resources provide valuable insights into promoting equality and inclusion in sports. They serve as practical tools for individuals and organizations seeking to create a more inclusive environment.

Aligning with the European Union's Objectives

The Just People project demonstrated alignment with the objectives set forth in the 'European Union Work Plan for Sport 2021-2024.' These objectives include creating a safe environment in sports by preventing harassment, abuse, and discrimination. The project also emphasized the role of sports as an educational tool to foster tolerance, solidarity, and inclusion. Additionally, it aimed to enhance the skills and competencies of athletes and staff, particularly coaches, through awareness-raising and knowledge development.

The Power of Advocacy and Awareness

One of the most significant achievements of the Just People project was the success of its advocacy campaign. By effectively raising public awareness about the challenges faced by LGBTIQ+ individuals in sports, the project contributed to a shift in societal perceptions. This not only impacted the LGBTIQ+ community but also had a broader influence, shedding light on the importance of inclusion and respect within the world of sports.

A Journey, Not a Destination

As the Final Meeting Online on June 14, 2023, marked the end of the project, it also signaled a new beginning. The Just People project, with its partners' dedication and the support of the Erasmus+ Program, has laid the foundation for ongoing efforts to make sports more inclusive, diverse, and welcoming to all.

The accomplishments of this project serve as an inspiring example of what can be achieved when different organizations and individuals come together to tackle discrimination and promote equality. While the project itself may have concluded, its impact will continue to resonate, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond the world of sports.
