ABSTRACT

TIME TO TEAM is a 15-month Erasmus+ Sport project that tackles the exclusion of transgender individuals from the world of sport, with a particular focus on team sports. Many transgender people still face stigma, violence and structural barriers in sports settings, leading to a lack of participation and, consequently, a loss of all the physical, psychological and social benefits that sport can offer.

The project seeks to address this gap by fostering more inclusive, safe, and welcoming sports environments. Through a transnational partnership composed of grassroots associations from Italy, Bulgaria and Portugal, the project will bring together coaches, youth workers, volunteers and association managers to engage in a shared educational journey. They will explore the lived experiences of transgender people, reflect on their practices, and co-create inclusive strategies to be applied within their organisations.

Central to this journey is the value of team sports, not only as a tool for physical health and personal development, but also as a powerful space for building social bonds and a sense of belonging. By combining non-formal education methods, peer learning, and concrete sport-based activities, TIME TO TEAM aims to strengthen the capacity of local associations to become drivers of change in their communities.

The project's main output will be a practical and replicable guide to support sport associations across Europe in their path towards inclusion, ensuring that everyone—regardless of gender identity—can feel safe, respected, and fully part of the team.
