ABSTRACT
Europe is undergoing rapid demographic changes marked by an increasingly ageing population. Recognizing the pivotal role of physical activity and sports participation in older adults for sustaining functional capabilities, preventing falls, and fostering social connections with potential positive impacts on health is imperative. Unfortunately, current studies indicate that a significant portion of individuals aged 55–69 (two-thirds) and those over 70 (three-quarters) rarely or never engage in sports or exercise.
It is crucial for sports associations to comprehend the implications of this demographic shift at local, national, and European levels and acknowledge the pivotal role they play in addressing the associated challenges. In response to this pressing need, ROMACAMMINA spearheads a project aimed at comprehending the primary barriers—social, physical, and cultural—hindering sports participation and physical activity among older adults. The project's focal point is the identification of specific practices that amplify the advantages of sports for the elderly. Moreover, it seeks to equip trainers and coaches with new skills to facilitate the creation of conditions conducive to proposing sports-related activities tailored to older individuals.
An integral aspect of the initiative involves establishing an international network of sports associations committed to championing active ageing. This collaborative consortium envisions fostering a platform for the exchange of experiences, implementation of effective interventions, provision of training and education, and the development of strategies for disseminating scientific knowledge to policy-makers and practitioners.
this project aspires not only to address the challenges posed by the ageing population but also to serve as a catalyst for positive change. By identifying and overcoming barriers, promoting tailored sports activities, and establishing a global network, ROMACAMMINA's initiative aims to usher in a new era of active ageing, enhancing the overall well-being of older adults across Europe.
