Behind the scenes: the making of "The Age of Sports" YouTube tutorials 🎬🎥

The production of the YouTube tutorials for the "The Age of Sports" (TAS) project was a meticulous process, aiming to create high-quality content focused on the physical well-being of older adults. The project, co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Sport program, is coordinated by the Italian association Romacammina in partnership with the Bulgarian organization Sportsroom and the Portuguese sports association Clube Desportivo da Escola Secundária Miguel Torga.

A key figure in the creation of the tutorials was Simone Gabrielli, an expert trainer and owner of the Skillap gym in Rome. Gabrielli has developed specific expertise in training older adults, thanks to his university thesis on this subject. During the filming, he actively demonstrated many of the exercises himself. His calm and precise execution ensured that the videos not only instruct but also motivate viewers to follow each step with confidence. Gabrielli made each exercise accessible, offering simplified variations for those with mobility issues or specific physical challenges.

The project also received support from OLTRE - NetworkLab, an international network involving over 30 associations across Europe. OLTRE promoted the initiative by helping the associations implement the project, elevating it from a local to a European level, while bringing European values to local communities. Thanks to this collaboration, the involved organizations were able to expand their capabilities and make a significant impact in their communities, promoting social inclusion through sports.

From planning to action: preparing the tutorials 📝

Before the cameras started rolling, the The Age of Sports team spent weeks planning the content. The goal was to create clear, effective, and accessible videos for a broad audience, including professional coaches and older adults eager to stay fit. Key questions included: How can we make these exercises safe and engaging for older adults?

Thanks to Simone Gabrielli’s expertise, the team was able to develop a well-structured exercise program. His insights on which exercises were best suited and how to adapt them to various fitness levels were crucial in ensuring the sessions were both safe and effective.

Simone’s gym, Skillap, in Rome, provided the perfect setting for the filming. It offered a familiar and welcoming environment, ideal for the target audience. In this setting, the team carefully studied each video sequence, breaking down exercises into simple steps to ensure they were easy to follow. From chair squats to balance exercises, every movement was tested and adapted to be safe and effective for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Filming day: lights, camera, action! 🎥

Filming day was the culmination of weeks of meticulous preparation. Early in the morning, the team gathered at Skillap, which had been transformed into a professional film set. Lights, cameras, and audio equipment were carefully arranged to ensure that every movement was captured from perfect angles, making each exercise clear and easy to understand for the audience.

Simone Gabrielli, who had contributed significantly to the project design, also played a hands-on role during the filming, demonstrating the exercises himself. His attention to detail and ability to adapt movements to the needs of people with different physical abilities made the tutorials accessible and practical, offering viewers safe and confident ways to exercise.
