The ISLANDS project is built on a partnership that stretches across the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, connecting three territories that share a common story of beauty, isolation and resilience. Sardinia, Ibiza and São Miguel form a unique triad of islands that, despite their differences, face similar environmental and social challenges. Their three organisations—ADELANTE from Sardinia, Asociación Balear de Taekwon-Do from Ibiza and CATTT from São Miguel—now work together to transform those challenges into opportunities.
sardinia: where the project begins
The journey starts in Sardinia with ADELANTE, the coordinating organisation. Sardinia is a place where ancient traditions blend with modern needs, where communities still value connection, land and identity. The island’s geographical distance from mainland Italy has shaped its character: strong, proud and deeply oriented toward community solidarity. ADELANTE brings this spirit into the project, combining local sensitivity with long-standing experience in international cooperation. Their role is to guide the overall vision, facilitate collaboration and maintain coherence throughout all project activities.
ibiza: an island of contrasts and opportunities
From Sardinia, the partnership moves west to the Balearic Islands. Ibiza is globally known for its nightlife and tourism, but beyond that image, there is a vibrant community that works daily to preserve its cultural heritage and protect the island from the impact of mass tourism. The Asociación Balear de Taekwon-Do has been active for years in promoting sport as a tool for discipline, education and youth empowerment. Their presence brings a valuable perspective: they understand how tourism can reshape an island’s social dynamics and how sport can help restore balance, inclusion and well-being for local communities.
são miguel: the atlantic voice of the project
Crossing the ocean, the partnership reaches the Azores, where CATTT represents the island of São Miguel. This green, volcanic territory is marked by breathtaking landscapes but also by the fragility typical of remote Atlantic environments. São Miguel faces the pressures of isolation, limited resources and the need to protect an ecosystem of extraordinary biodiversity. CATTT works closely with young people and local communities, promoting sport, education and cultural development. Their contribution is essential in helping the partnership understand how environmental and social issues emerge in more remote island territories and how communities can respond creatively.
a three-island alliance shaped by connection
Together, these three organisations form the backbone of ISLANDS. What connects them is not geography alone, but the shared understanding that remote territories are rich in potential, creativity and community power. Each island brings a different landscape, a different rhythm of life and a different way of relating to sport and the environment. Yet, they all recognise the same needs: more participation, stronger community networks, better opportunities for young people and a deeper awareness of environmental responsibilities.
The partnership is therefore more than a collaboration. It is a meeting point between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, between volcanic terrains and rocky coastlines, between communities that have learned to thrive despite isolation. By working together, ADELANTE, the Asociación Balear de Taekwon-Do and CATTT give life to a shared vision: sport as a bridge, sustainability as a priority and cooperation as the path toward stronger, more resilient island communities.
In the next article, we will explore the core themes of the project and the challenges that islands and remote areas face today.
